SGFCSD_Bulldog_Building_Our_Future-296x300A $57.8 million project to upgrade facilities at the South Glens Falls Central School District will go to voters on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

The capital project would build an eight-classroom science addition at the high school, and six classrooms at Ballard Elementary School to accommodate a growing student population, district officials said. It would expand library media centers at Ballard and Tanglewood elementary schools, and make improvements to the high school auditorium. The plans would also address building maintenance needs such as roofing, windows, doors and flooring at all six school buildings.

The district planned the project’s scope over the past two years, with guidance from a 35-member community advisory group and others.

“This project represents careful study and evaluation of our district’s facilities,” Superintendent of Schools Michael Patton said. “We believe the plan to improve our facilities is going to make our buildings and sites safer and efficient, and create an improved learning environment for student success.”

State aid would cover 71 percent of the project’s cost, and the South Glens Falls district would use $1.1 million in reserve funds toward the project. The district would finance the remaining $15.7 million over a 30-year bond. If voters approve the building proposition, it would cost those who own property assessed at $100,000 about $16 a year over the life of the loan, according to the school district.
