Shenendehowa High School Counseling, College and Career Center will host “A Night with Jessica Lahey” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Shenendehowa High School, Route 146, Clifton Park.
Jessica Lahey is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, “The Gift of Failure; How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.”
Lahey’s book, “The Gift of Failure” is essential reading for parents and educators. She discusses how overparenting makes it more difficult for students to learn to deal with disappointments and push through challenges they encounter in school and life. Lahey focuses on fostering intrinsic motivation and resilience in kids so that they become motivated to own their education, learn deeply and durably and develop resilience. Lahey summarizes the current research on autonomy-supportive parenting and teaching, competence, rewards, praise and failure. She explains how parents and educators can give students the support and encouragement they need to stay motivated over the long term.
Counselors feel that Lahey’s message is valuable for both parents and children. She offers practical advice that will have a lasting impact on family dynamics and parenting, advancing the ultimate goal of raising independent, resilient and intrinsically motivated children.
Lahey’s talk will include an question and answer session and a book signing.
