Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office has begun its membership drive to support the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute.
The institute, established in 1979, advances criminal justice education, discourages juvenile delinquency and supports victims of crimes and their families.
The programs include the Sheriff’s Summer Camp for nearly 900 children who are economically disadvantaged, a criminal justice scholarship program for students studying criminal justice and crime victim notification programs like the victim hotlines and order of protection notifications programs.
County Sheriff Michael Zurlo said the donations for children to go to camp are especially important.
“Donations allow us to send at-risk children to camp to spend a week doing traditional camp activities,” Zurlo said. “At the end of the week, the deputies there put on their uniforms and these kids learn that we are on their side, that we are human.”
