Rowers capture gold

Good morning. I have another great story about the sports accomplishments of local youth.

During the same week in which the Saratoga Springs Blue Streaks became state hockey champions, the Saratoga Rowing Association’s women’s varsity crew team won gold at the Australian World Championships in the high school women’s coxed eight category at Sydney.

The team consisted of Saratoga Springs Caroline Murphy, Shannon Merboth, Alexis Georgia, Kerri Wegner, Kelli Wegner, Mackenzie Battle, Meghan Hampton, MacKenzie Hart and Claire Murphy. They were invited to the Sydney International Rowing Regatta by defeating all other U.S. teams at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.

Saratoga Springs went wire to wire and took home the gold by topping Swan River Composite by more than six seconds. They completed the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 55 seconds. Here’s a photo gallery supplied by Saratoga County District Attorney James A. Murphy III, whose two daughters competed in the event and were crowned champions.
