Criminal charges were filed Monday against a Stillwater middle school teacher who allegedly groped a student in class.

Gregg N. Mabey, 59, was charged with forcible touching and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors, on Monday in Stillwater Town Court, according to police.

The school district placed the Williamstown, Mass., man on administrative leave last week as police investigated a complaint that he acted unprofessionally and inappropriately toward a female student in the presence of other students in class.

“A police investigation revealed that the defendant, who is a teacher, did intentionally grab the buttocks of a 13-year-old female student,” Stillwater police said on its Facebook page. “The act was witnessed by several students.”

Mabey was taken to Saratoga County jail on $10,000 bail and ordered to stay away from the student, police said. He was no longer being held at the jail Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said.

“Stillwater Police are not aware of any additional victims, however, police are asking parents to talk to their children regarding this incident and to contact police with any unreported incidents or information,” police said in the statement.

The school district said on its website that it “will continue to work with the Stillwater Police Department as their investigation continues.”
