A new grand piano will arrive at Saratoga Springs High School next month, and it promises to open up additional opportunities for music festivals, recitals, an open-mic event and more in the community.

Friends of Music Saratoga Springs, a parent-led booster club for the city school district’s music department, received funding from the Alfred Z. Solomon Charitable Trust to purchase a Boston GP156 Performance Edition grand piano made by Steinway & Sons.

The new piano will be placed in Saratoga Springs High School’s Meade Teaching Auditorium.

“This new instrument will open up a variety of new performance and rehearsal opportunities for students and the community,” said Peter Nelson, president of the friends group.

A dedication ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. April 9 in the high school auditorium, with a reception to follow. An annual performance series will be inaugurated as part of the gift. The first performance is set for 7:30 p.m. May 5 in the auditorium.

“This generous investment will benefit the students by allowing them the opportunity to perform with a high-quality instrument,” said Milt Lee, music department director. “The pianos we currently have are over 50 years old and have been compromised from having been moved frequently over the years. Being able to have a piano on a professional truck – a large rolling platform – eliminated this problem going foward.”

The piano was purchased from Artist Pianos in Latham.
