WSWHE BOCES, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity of Northern Saratoga and the Saratoga-Warren-Washington Workforce Development System, will partner with the Saratoga Builders Association and Curtis Lumber to build a tiny house.

WSWHE BOCES high school and adult students along with Habitat volunteers will work to complete a fully functional tiny house, which will be presented during the 2019 Showcase of Homes. The tiny house will feature the latest in building techniques and products, as well as high-quality furnishings all built by local students and volunteers.

Adult students who are interested in joining a class to build the tiny house can come to an informational session from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Donald Myers Education Center, 15 Henning Road, Saratoga Springs.

Classes begin Jan. 22 and are scheduled to run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through June.

The tiny house build will be part of a new, 100-hour course that provide an introduction to the various stages of home building. Topics include residential construction codes and regulations, safety, tool usage, materials selection, and various construction techniques. Participants are eligible to receive OSHA certification upon completion of the course.

“We are so excited to be able to engage in partnerships that will enrich the workforce in our region, and provide both students and adult learners, the opportunity to gain hands on experience in the construction field, while working as a team,” said Dr. Turina Parker, executive director for Educational and Support.

Visitors to the informational session can learn general information about this career field and get an overview of the training program.

Local employers will also speak about the industry and what it takes to be successful.

Registration for the free information session can be made by going to  https://www.etaprogram.org/page/construction or by calling Melissa Briggs at WSWHE BOCES at 518-581-3716.
